SUMMARY:Pest Odyssey 2021- The Next Generation – virtual conference
DESCRIPTION:ICM will present a paper at this year’s Pest Odyssey Conference which takes place on 20th – 22nd September 2021. \nIt will be a fully virtual conference and will enable participants to focus on changes and new developments in IPM over the last ten years. \nICM’s contribution re-evaluates the temperature tolerance of some typical museum pests. The temperature trials were carried outby an independent German institute\, MPA Eberswalde. \nResults clearly hint at the possibility of treatments at much lower temperatures (with longer holding phases) than hitherto recommended. \n \n  \nWant to know more? \n==> http://www.pestodyssey.org/

SUMMARY:Sotheby's Institute NY Presents: Sustainability in Art Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Ecological insect pest treatments and biocide decontamination in art and heritage collections\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nPlease join our inaugural panel on sustainable art conservation methods which features leading scientific experts from the UK\, Japan\, and Germany. Due to climate change\, art collections in museums as well as contemporary art galleries face new threats from insects. Insect pests can destroy artworks and even entire collections. As a consequence\, biocides have been applied to artworks and collections over centuries\, especially during the 20th century. Today most biocides are banned in many countries as they have been identified as CMR (cancerogenic mutagen reprotoxic) substances. Treatments with warm humidified air are an effective\, safe and sustainable way of controlling insects in collections. Experts will discuss museum pests\, describe the effect of climate change on the distribution of insects\, and explore the impact of insect infestations on collections as well as the treatment of infested objects and even whole buildings. \nIn an adapted form\, the humidity regulated warm air method can also be used to decontaminate biocide-polluted objects and collection. Biocide residues in museums and storage facilities are a serious challenge worldwide as they have an adverse effect on the human health. Many biocides will also harm the objects\, they can cause corrosion and discolouration. A solution is desperately needed. One of the leading experts in the field of museum biocides will introduce the most common and harmful biocides in their historic context. He will also report on the first results of a systematic decontamination study using the ICM method. \nSIA-NY is committed to developing a sustainable and green campus. We continue to find more sustainable ways of operating and are proud to present programming that highlights advancements in the intersections of art\, science\, and sustainability. \n\n\nWelcome + Introductions \n\nWelcome from Christine Kuan\, CEO/Director\, SIA NY\n\n\nIntroductions by Leen Gysen\, CEO/founder IPARC/ICM\, Master of Arts & Archaeology – MBA\n\nPanelists + Topics \nDavid Pinniger: Climate change’s influence of insect species distribution worldwide + an introduction to insects in museums and collections and the damage they can cause \nPinniger is an independent entomologist providing advice and training on pests in museums\, galleries and historic houses. David has delivered lectures and training workshops in many countries and is the author of over 60 papers and publications including the standard book “Integrated Pest Management in Cultural Heritage”. \nProf. Dr. Yoshihisa Fujii :Treating a Japanese wooden temple against a woodboring beetle infestation with humidified warm air as replacement of a highly toxic gas which was used in the past \nFujii teaches and does research at Kyoto University. Professor Fujii and his colleagues are investigating the applicability of the humidity-controlled heat treatment as a replacement for toxins in insect infested heritage buildings. They have treated two temples at the famous Nikko temple site in 2017 and 2018. \nDr. rer. nat. Boaz Paz: Poisoning collections and museum staff: the widespread use of biocides in the past and its ongoing consequences / Decontamination using the ICM method \nPaz is managing director at Paz Laboratorien\, Germany. Boaz is a chemist with professional focus on biocide residues in museum collections\, pollutant analysis\, hazard assessment and decontamination. He also offers services and research in provenance\, age determination\, authenticity of artworks and cultural heritage. \nNikolaus Wilke: sustainable approaches to insect and biocide decontamination of museum and art collections using humidity-regulated warm air treatments \nWilke is director of international business development at ICM. Nikolaus is a trained wood conservator and has worked with the humidity regulated warm air treatment method since the 1990s. His professional focus is on the treatment of insect infested as well as biocide contaminated collections and artworks. \n  \n\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Webinar “A sustainable approach to insect and biocide decontamination treatments in collections” (in English)
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that the 17/11 workshop in The Hague will now be held digitally as a free webinar\, in collaboration with RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History.\nThis will allow for many more interested individuals and institutions to participate.\nThe originally planned format would have been restricted to 45 attendees due to Covid-19 rules. \n  \n==>Link to video/webinar\n  \nThe relevance of the Corona pandemic\, case studies and research data\nArt and heritage collections are at risk to get attacked by insects which can severely damage or\, if undetected\, destroy the objects. One of many unwanted side effects of the corona pandemic lockdown and reduced or furloughed staff is the decrease of collection monitoring in museums\, storage areas and heritage sites. This could result in a drastic increase of insect activity. \nThere is yet another and quite different aspect of the corona pandemic in context with collections: some of the biocides which have been applied to art and heritage collections have an adverse effect on the human immune system. Even decades after the application some of the CMR (cancerogenic mutagen reprotoxic) substances remain highly toxic and harmful. \nThese are just two topics which our expert team of speakers will touch and discuss with you in our webinar. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFind out more about RKD \n  \n  \nRegister now\n  \n  \nPROGRAMME \n14:00   Welcome  \nMireille Pondman\, bussiness director RKD\, The Netherlands and Leen Gysen\, managing partner IPARC\, Belgium \n14:10   New pests\, new challenges\nDavid Pinniger\, museum entomologist\, UK \n14:30   IPM management and preventive conservation at IPARC / Next generation ICM chambers for pest and contamination management\nNikolaus Wilke\, partner and business development director ICM\, Germany  \n14:50   Case studies regulated humidity warm air treatment of V&A collection pieces \nVal Blythe\, preventive conservator and integrated pest management (IPM) co-ordinator  \n15:10   Biocides in museum collections – Contamination\, analysis and decontamination\nBoaz Paz\, Chemist and decontamination expert Paz Laboratorien\, Germany  \n15:40   Two decontamination case studies using the humidity regulated warm air method: PCP and Naphathalene\nMichael Gagelmann\, Biologist Oeko Consult\, Germany  \n16:00   Case studies regulated humidity warm air treatment of Flemish old masters\nDavid Lainé\, senior partner painting conservation & research\, IPARC\, Belgium  \n16:20   ICM service provisioning and methodology\nLeen Gysen\, managing partner IPARC\, Belgium \n16:30  Presentation: ‘RKDtechnical and Reference Lab De Stijl – preserving and presenting technical documentation’\nNadja Garthoff\, Curator RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History \n16:50   Q&A

\nLocatie: Sint-Pieterskerk (Grote Markt 1\, 3000 Leuven) \n\nFoto: Rudi Van Beek

SUMMARY:PiKANT! Vijf eeuwen cultuurgeschiedenis uitgekleed

SUMMARY:BRAFA
DESCRIPTION:Art Talk by IPARC on environmental monitoring\nThis lecture by Leen Gysen will analyse how environmental conditions such as light\, temperature and relative humidity as well as packaging\, transport\, storage systems and insects can impact the lifetime of an artwork\, hence its sustainable value. Both public institutions and private collectors are faced with challenges when conserving and managing collections. The regular monitoring of artworks provides relevant data sets that enable short term interventions and long term solutions to minimise risk and guarantee social\, historical and financial value.
